Previously on The Amazing Race,11 teams of 2 set out from Tokyo, Japan and travelled 4330 km to the busy city of Ho Chi Minh City, Japan. Upon arrival, teams fought for spots on buses to Cai Be. Teams on the second bus decided to pool in money to buy up the remaining seats, in hope of catching the first bus. Cousins Yuyan & Lisa stumbled at the mud task, while Felicia & Youwei had no trouble completing it. However, their relief was short-lived when Felicia is unable to complete the roadblock after 4 tries. Watching their lead evaporate, Felicia decided to take a risk by giving up on the task. Buddies Yanzhi & John outran siblings Shelia & Erwitt to claim first place. While Zhenyang & Pohchoon and Timothy & Siying battled to avoid elimination. In the end, they were both saved by Felicia's penalty, causing Felicia & Youwei to be the second team eliminated.

In this detour, teams have to choose between 2 tasks which allows them to explore Vietnam. The choice, Child's Play and Word Play. In Child's Play, teams have to travel to a local park and choose a concrete animal from a kiosk. While navigating the animal across bumpy pathways of the park, teams must collect 5 different coloured balloons from vendors. Then, they have to deliver the animal and balloons to the children playground to receive the next clue. In Word Play, teams must travel to a hotel and locate the observatory deck. Then, using a binoculars, They must identify 6 Vietnamese letters moving with the congested traffic at the crowded intersection below. After certifying that they have the correct 6 letters with the security guard, then must seek help from the locals to form the Vietnamese word DOCLAP, which means independence.Jenyun: Let's do the word one!
